I’ve wanted to blog easy children’s recipes for well over two years now, but we’ve never had the time or the attention span to actually stick to it long enough to get a good rhythm going. Enter Corona Virus and suddenly we have a lot of time, and like many of you, we’ve found ourselves ‘stuck’ at home. The upside is that we’ve had a lot of time to get baking and cooking.
Ellemae, my smallest, just turned 8 years old. She’s a huge fan of Masterchef Australia, and loves spending time in the kitchen. These recipes are all pretty basic – we don’t make our own pasta for the pasta salad, for example. They also use few, commonly found ingredients which I think make them ideal lockdown recipes because they’re cheap and cheerful! Mostly, however, they are child approved. My girl is a pretty fussy eater, but every recipe we’ve tried she’s been happy to eat because she’s spent the time making it!
These recipes are all, start to finish prepared by my 8-year-old, but with some help I’d say younger children could have a go at them too. You know your child – do they need knife help? Assistance with the oven? Help them out, but let them lead as best possible! It’s about learning for them – mixing, weighing, measuring, cutting, chopping, peeling. The harder stuff can come later!
These recipes generally are simple, standard diet recipes. You can, of course, substitute as you see fit (substitute pasta for gluten-free pasta, or cheese for vegan cheese, or yoghurt for coconut yoghurt.) Use your discretion. I’m Keto myself, but the kids follow a regular diet.
We sometimes double or halve recipes, making for good maths practice, and I’ve even managed to get her to do some writing practice by writing little notes to give to people along with food gifts.
Each recipe is free on the blog, but as I’m not working much at the moment (thanks lockdown!) I’ve also created printable recipe cards for each recipe. These are for sale at 99p each. You can download it, print it and cut it out. We laminate them and attach them to a keyring and Ellemae loves using these recipe cards as her own little cookbook with step-by-step instructions. If you choose to buy one, I thank you for helping me support my family!
